Week 4 to 27/09/11

This week I have been thinking about visualising  the lie and the deceit of our own eyes. Would the characters in the story actually start to imagine the fabrics and the clothes in their own minds eye?
I think that they would and use this image to relay the details of the fabrics and clothing to others.
If this is the case what would the fabric and the clothes look like to them, in their imagination.?
The fabric would be similar but not identically because they are given some detail by the conmen but not all so the imagination would construct the final image.
I have been therefore making material swatches from the glass prints made in previous weeks. The print is the template or the information supplied by the conmen so each piece is similar but each piece is a different colour or slightly different style because the rest of the image is made in the imagination or minds eye of the person shown the invisible fabric.

I have also been working on images for the emperors clothing, or how the clothing would look in the imagination of each individual.

This image is made from glass print and drawn into to create the final image of the emperors clothes. This piece is at the point of when the illusion or spell is broken when the child states the truth ,The Emperor is Naked. The clothes begin to disintegrate before the eyes of the crowd.

Week 3 up to 22/09/11 practical work

smashed laminated glass
I have been using the glass pieces to as plates to print with. These plates are made from smashing laminated glass.  The lamination allows the glass to crack but not completely break.

I have also been using 6mm float glass to smash. This glass completely breaks and  I have rearrange the pieces to make different images.
I have been looking at clothing of emperors and I have arrange these pieces in the style of Japanese emperors clothing.
Finally I have been using the this to make prints which I have drawn into with inks and pro markers to create clothing an image of the emperors clothes.

week 3 up to 22/09/11

This week I have been looking at the shattered glass as the illusion or lie. In the story the lie is constructed or woven as each person states it to be the truth.
We deceive ourselves in order to give credibility to our deceit of others. I have been using the glass to construct the illusion but because it is fragile and transparent and at any time the spell or the illusion could, and is eventually broken by the telling of the truth.

Week 2

I have also been working with glass. In the tale the whole illusion is shatter by the statement of the child. The Emperor is naked.
6mm float glass smashed with a hammer

I have been experimenting with adding colour.

This effect is multi layered, the smashed lie, the lie running through society it also makes me think of  creases in fabric. The glass is a good medium for this brief because it is clear and unseen like the lie and the cloth.

This week I intend to continue working with glass and I will be experimenting with breaking laminated glass which will crack but not break all the way through. The artists I have been looking at so far are Jos A Smith, Anthony Gormley and George Papadopolulos.
This is great book for techniques of working with glass lamination.

The Emperor's New Clothes

Week 1
This entry covers my progress from the 5/09/11 to 15/09/11.
I have been exploring this brief by focusing on the lie and how the obvious lie grows and weaves its way through the whole of society as each person  in turn professes it to be the truth. I started this process with drawing trying to visualise the lie and its effects on a person. There is an arrogance with the characters in the story because the all assume that they will be able to see the cloth but they also are sure some of their peers will not be able to see the cloth and so be exposed as frauds or fools and unfit for the positions they hold.

Drawing to visualise the lie and it wrapping and weaving around a person.

I have been continuing this theme with the concept of the lie being woven around the body as the emperor's clothes are being woven on the empty loom.

I have also been working with wire knitting and weaving wire and strips of paper.

I have been thinking of combining wire and fused glass.

This week I have been developing these ideas further. Drawing the body bound inspired by Emperors armour.
